Hi I am Tess, owner, designer and maker here at Yellow Room Designs. I started creating in my sunny yellow kitchen as a form of therapy. I tried my hands at all kinds of things and got a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction out of making things from start to finish, learning all kinds of new skills as I went. When I couldn’t find coasters I liked on the high street, I took on the challenge to make my own, and had a great reaction. This quickly escalated my hobby into a business. Yellow Room Designs was born!
After four years in business, I now have my own studio, Yellow Room Designs, based in Yorkshire and I sell my products on my own website, Etsy, at markets, and in local galleries and gift stores. I also attended my first trade show last year and I am really excited to be one of the lucky businesses to have a pop up shop in John Lewis York in conjunction with The Great British Exchange later this year.
My coasters are made using a technique similar to decoupage, which involves the layering of paper and varnish to create a decal or transfer, which is heat and water resistant and then applied using a permanent adhesive. To ensure the best quality for my customers, I experimented with many different varnishes and materials, refining my making process for two years, to create the product I have today. I also enjoy collaborating with other artists to create modern, eye-catching designs. I take my inspiration mainly from bold colour, geometrics, and mid-century modern design. If you would like to know more about where it all started then please check out this video on my facebook page.
I hope you enjoy using my coasters!
